I am looking in to getting a tablet for a friend for Christmas and am wanting to know what to get her. I know nothing and need lots of advice. What are my options?
What about an I-Pad? I feel like this would be the most accessible option if your friend happens to be visually impaired. Judging by the fact that you posted this thread, I think it is safe to assume so.
Of course, depending on how much money you have will dictate what type of tablet you can afford. I believe (but please, someone correct me if I am wrong) that certain Android tablets are accessible. I wonder if a Nexis 7 would work? Microsoft has released tablets as well, but these are incredibly expensive, though I think with the introduction of Jaws 15, it is possible to interact with the touch screen.
A couple of AT vendors are attempting to script Android and adapt it to a Braille device. There is one note-taker, which has not been released yet, but is said to have a 20-cell Braille display. These are really expensive, though. What does your friend hope to accomplish with the device? In my opinion, an I-Pad really isn't that different than an I-Phone except for there is more screen real-estate.
An IPad would make a great stocking stuffer. Get the IPad mini if you're tight on cash. You can try some of the android tablets, but you're not guaranteed accessibility out of the box. However, if the friend is not blind, you might look into a kindle fire. I heard they're less expensive than the IPad--so if you're trying ot save money, go for an android or a kindle fire.
My favorite choice is Ipad, hands down. I actually have both an IPhone adn an IPad, and they're not really the same--there are more differences than just sceen size to inform the previous poster. But only subtle differences.
Anyway, good luck!!!!
iPad a stocking stuffer? Can I hang my stocking at your house? Smile.
Nexus 7 works, but I don't know the ends and outs of configuring it.
If the person is visual, you've got lots of choices. Say that, and a budget, and that will help?
its really depends on your budget and how close a friend she or he is i guess. If he or she needs accessibility support, try iPad or iPad mini, Nexus 7 or Nexus 10 will be your best bet. Then, you can also get some tabs that run full windows 8...
If not, you can also consider Galaxy Note, NoteII, and other tabs. Really, it comes to what you want what you looking for, and how much you have to spend.
Dang, I need some new friends. lmao
smile, I know the configuration for a nexis7, I have one. It would make a great stocking stuffer and its quite accessible out of the box. I would get the new nexis7 because its thinner, faster and has a better camra it comes with android 4.3 on board. That for those who do not know, equals button labeling, better handling of web scripts that are now built in to talkback and its cheeper then a Ipad many.
One thing to note, the amazon kindle does not have access to the google play store nor wil it ever gain access to it. So if you buy one your locked into the amazon eco system something to keep in mind.
Let me make it simple. If your friend has already married into the Apple infrastructure, iPad Mini starts at $299. However, if not, I do like the Nexus 7. I haven't used Talkback in 4.3, but Starfly's the expert on everything Android, and if he says it's great, it probably is. For the money, you get more with the Nexus, but again, if your friend is already carrying an iPhone, and/or owns a Mac, the experience will be frustrating at first going back and forth, so better to stick with the iPad.
I agree with the last post, if your barried deep with in the apple eco system then a Ipad many would be better. Either first or second Gen one.
That's also true for Android: there are people I will not buy an Apple product for because they have already spent good money in the Google Play Store and so their best bet is Android.
I've been pleased with the daughter's Galaxy Note 2, though the Nexus 7 is a fine device also.
I know nothing about accessibility for the Galaxy Note 2 because the daughter does not need this.
I would avoid a Windows tablet unless it's going to be a Surface Pro - basically a laptop - because the Microsoft store doesn't have as many apps yet as the Google Play store or Apple Store.
The truth is we are all locked into one ecosystem or another, eventually, due to cost. So you want the best possible options for your user.
I know Windows phone touts its cameras but Androids have far and above any camera than most people will ever need, and this comes from my photographer of a daughter. She says to go higher than that you need dedicated camera equipment which she does have but still. Most your Android phones have more than plenty of camera. And Apple's while less than Android devices, is still plenty.
Yep, some people seem to have the (best) friends. Lol
She can see well enough to read print and does fine on her normal cell.
I have been friends with her since we were 12 and I am wanting to get her something since she has been doing amazingly well with her life.
I am wanting something that is just a couple of hundrid but still is flexible enough for her to be able to do a bit of things on it. She has a kid she is wanting to do some learning things with on it but it is mainly going to be for her...
At Write Away,
Other than the screen size of an IPad, what is really the difference between this device and an IPhone. Nothing. Each has the same processor, Siri, 4G capabilities, E.T.C.
Nicky, definitely the iPad Mini, in that case for $299. You may be able to go to Best Buy, and buy one that's been returned for even cheaper. It still carries the manufacturer warranty, too!
Okay, still how is this different than an IPhone?
I think I might go for an IPad minny, sounds great and can get a used one like you said but what are other thoughts?
Thanks for all...
With your requirement, i would suggest either the iPad mini or the Nexus 7 new gen. I have the first gen of nexus 7 as well as the first gen of mini. Both are great in their own way. As one who invest a lot on iBooks, mini will be my choice. Although, i do frequent Google Play store for quite a bit too. If she does not require any access, nexus 7 in some way, will be a better choice than mini.
HardyBoy, some of the apps you can get on the IPad and the IPhone vary. There are apps specifically for the IPad and some that function best only on the IPhone. Also, the IPad has a dedicated switch to turn orientation locking on and off. Also, with voiceover, the navigation between the IPhone and IPad mini differs somewhat because the touch keyboard layout is a bit different--the IPad, for instance, always displays the period, comma, an a few other punctuation marks along with the letters while on the Iphone, you need to click the "more" icon to toggle between punctuations, simbols and letters. Also, certain streams work better on the IPad than on the IPhone because though they may have the same processor, the IPad seems to process things faster. Keep in mind, I have the IPad mini first gen and the Iphone five, so they are devices that came out around the same time. it's not as if I have an outdated IPhone.
So yes. There are differences. There you go.
Yes, but VO essentially works the same way. Okay, so there is a dedicated switch for locking orientation; most apps that are written for the IPad account for screen variation. You still haven't given me any conclusive proof. In terms of Vo on an IPhone, you just tap the more button. Of course, the keyboard layout is different, but if that is an issue, users can purchase a Bluetooth one. Better yet, he or she can choose to drive the IPad with a Braille Display. Please tell me one accessibility difference, which you still haven't addressed thus far to support your argument.
Hmm, the iPad is going to have more of the apps she wants. In this case, the ones for children, in particular. with those requirements the apple devices are better.
I care more about what is best for my friend, not for a blind person. Neither one is blind so this doesn't matter. Please don't start any fights on this thread, I am just looking for advice for what would work best for my friend and the differences between a few things and some personal thoughts...
I am not asking for a debate or a fight or which one is the best but what are your thoughts on the different devices without slamming another and going back and forth snapping toard eachother about who is right or wrong...
. Only I and my friend can decide which device will be best in the end for all of her requirements.
Thanks for the help to all
I suggested a nexis7 because its cheaper then a Ipad many and its screen res is just as good as the new Ipad many.
The person who said Apple will be better with kids involved is probably right. Apple has been kids-friendly for 30-plus years, and their devices have ready-made parental controls built in. Not to say Android does not, but only to say Apple's is ready made so people who are nontechnical and nott subscribed to lists can understand it out of the box.
That would be my primary reason for recommending Apple - if kids are involved.
HardyBoy, look back on my first post. Who's talking about accessibility differences. I merely stated that there are differences in navigation between the two devices, a few which specifically have to do with voiceover. I never mentioned that one is better than the other because, as I said, I have both. I'm not sure what you're getting at here but I did list all of the notable differences--All of which were correct. Whatever you're trying to debate here, it's in everyone's best interest if you let it go since you yourself agree with my previously posted list. lol. Let's not start drama when no one was arguing in the first place.
Basically why I recommended apple. most kids apps are advertised and developed for apple first, and may never come to android. Plus, the parental controls are really flexible and powerful. In this case, I think it would work better. In another, maybe an android device would be best.
Plus, apple provides one year of free basic apple care, and 90 days of phone support out of the gate. If she's got a child, being able to take the tablet to an apple store and easily get it fixed/replaced will be a serious advantage, if anything goes wrong.
I love the prental control advantidge and the easy out of the box deal that an IPad gives you. i am leaning that way. Now lets see how it all goes. I want to get her one but not spend to much so lets hope I can find a great one at BestBuy used but works like new for a lower price... Plus their inshurence plan that they usually have...
Nexus is good, but if you are looking refurbished, you could get a mini for about 249 with the same one year and such as new. Some say the Nexus is easier to hold, more comfortable in your hand. Video quality might be a tab better on the Nexus as well, if we are talking visual people.
